La Tendre Mélancholie – the harpsichord music of François Couperin. Concerts Series 2018.

2018 marks the 350th anniversary of the birth of François Couperin. Court musician the Louis XIV, and cosmopolitan Parisian, Couperin was the most poetic of harpsichord composers, whose sophisticated and intimate musical language reflects the complex, multi-faceted and finely-layered aspects of the French Grand Siècle. His elegance of touch also provides a musical echo to the intimate melancholy seen in the paintings of his close contemporary Antoine Watteau.

Throughout 2018 I will be giving a series of concerts commemorating the life and times of Couperin. Programmes will include music by Couperin himself as well as his contemporaries and composers in subsequent generations who were influenced by him. Please download below a PDF for details of the whole series. Details of individual concerts are listed on this pageYeo Yat-Soon: solo harpsichord

The Music of Couperin and Henry Purcell

Purcell and Couperin were arguably the greatest composers of their age in their respective countries. Their musical styles have a close artistic and emotional affinity. The lives of the two composers were also linked by one royal personage: King James II. Purcell is pictured singing in the coronation procession of King James in 1685 and composed several works for him during his short reign. After he was deposed in the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688, he was given a residence by Louis XIV at the palace of St Germain-en-Laye near Paris. Here Couperin was a frequent performer of chamber music and his harpsichord works include references to the exiled English court. I am delighted to conclude my year of Couperin-themed concerts with music by both composers linked to James II in the majestic setting of the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court.

Entry is free with an admission ticket to Hampton Court Palace. Details of the Chapel Royal Concert Series: www.chapelroyal.org; tickets and further details of Hampton Court Palace: hrp.org.uk

'A HISTORY OF EARLY KEYBOARD MUSIC THROUGH EIGHT TREASURES'

I am delighted to be giving my first solo recital at the University of Birmingham since joining the Music Department's Centre for Early Music Performance and Research as harpsichord tutor and early chamber music specialist. Each 'treasure' is represented by a single movement work which captures one aspect of the history of early keyboard music.

The light space and rich acoustics of the Dome Rehearsal Hall will provide a beautiful setting for this musical journey through three centuries of music by Aston, Cabezon, Michelangelo Rossi, Froberger, Louis Couperin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Royer and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach.
